[May 05, 2008]  (AP)  Thunderstorms were to explode across the Southern Plains on Monday, with strong damaging winds and large hail anticipated.

InvestmentThe area at greatest threat for damaging storms was western Kansas, but high winds could occur anywhere in the region. The storms were to be strongest in the afternoon and early evening.

Afternoon thunderstorms were also possible across the interior West, with flash flooding possible.

The Sierra Nevada range was to see a few afternoon thunderstorms as well. West of the mountains, the West Coast was to remain dry. Cool temperatures were to linger at the coast, with the interior sunny and pleasant.

The Southeast could also see afternoon thunderstorms in the Carolinas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 17 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo., to a high of 97 degrees at Yuma, Ariz.
