[May 06, 2008]  (AP)  Showers, thunderstorms and potential tornadoes threatened residents of the central U.S. early Tuesday, while storms rattled the Pacific Northwest.

Auto RepairStrong to severe storms were expected over portions of the upper Midwest to the central and southern Great Plains, with the main threat being large and damaging hail and severe winds. Also, a few tornadoes may erupt across the central Plains.

Farther north, a low pressure system was expected to move east from the Northern Rockies, producing light to moderate rain along its path. This system also could spark showers and thunderstorms across the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

Out West, another Pacific storm system approached the coast, bringing light rain back to the Pacific Northwest. Pockets of thunderstorms were expected in the Four Corners.

Afternoon rain showers were possible in northern New England as a weak front pushes through. Light coastal rain was forecast for the Mid-Atlantic during the afternoon and evening hours.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Hallock, Minn., to a high of 93 degrees at Okeechobee, Fla.
