| Burma Shave, a 1950s brand of brushless shaving cream, was best
known for its rhyming advertising slogans on small highway
billboards. The contest challenged schoolchildren and adults to
create similar, five-line rhymes to promote the 2008 Illinois State
Fair. An individual and a classroom winner were selected.
Elizabeth Drake of Springfield submitted the winning individual
entry. Katie Innis of Elgin, a student at St. Laurence School, was
chosen as the classroom winner. "This contest was intended not only to encourage creative
writing, but also to get people of all ages in the 'fair spirit' and
help us to promote the Illinois State Fair, one of the state's
biggest family traditions," Bliefnick said. "I think we accomplished
our goals and hope the participants who entered the contest had as
much fun creating their rhymes as we did reading them." Drake's rhyme reflects the fair's theme, "A Family Tradition." It
reads: Milk-a-cow or Bake-a-pieFireworks light the sky
 Cows that moo
 And pigs that squeal
 Competition's a family deal!
Innis' winning submission was: The bestPlace to play
 On a
 Hot Summer's
 Day!
A sixth line, "Illinois State Fair August 8-17," will be added to
the end of both rhymes. The fair will display them on promotional
			materials and signs.
