Mayor Beth Davis-Kavelman recognized with appreciation the work that
the three assistant fire chiefs, Mark Miller, Tom Martin and Steve
Dahm, have done since the early retirement of James Davis at the end
of last year. "The men worked on 24 hours, off 48 hours, covering
the chief's duties and their own. We saw what they were made of, and
they've done a very good job," she said. While it is normally the
policy to hire and promote from within a city department, the mayor
said that the council recommended considering applications from
outside the department, as well as from inside, this time. Davis-Kavelman
credited chairman Melody Anderson for the extra time needed with the
process. Reviewing candidates took several months and attracted
applicants from the East Coast to the West Coast and all over the
states.
Hulett brings with him an extensive fire training background.
With that the council accepted him with a 10-0 vote. His salary is
set at $55,000 a year, plus standard vacation pay.
City attorney Bill Bates administered the oath of office and
Chief Hulett was seated for the remainder of the meeting.
The new chief was accompanied by his mother, Helen; his father,
Allen, a former Illinois fire chief; his sister, Kay; his good
friend and retired firefighter, Ross; and Sgt. Wong, who is a
firefighter just back from a tour of duty in Iraq. Hulett recognized
that the mayor's son is in Iraq currently.
He said his wife and kids were not able to be here, as they were
at the birth of his first grandchild.
Hulett was to report to work today.
