"As families prepare to hit the roadways this weekend, one of the
most important things they can do to stay safe is simply -- buckle
up," said Blagojevich. "Five years ago, I signed the primary safety
belt enforcement law. Since then, we've seen a record-high 90
percent compliance with the law, and traffic fatalities have fallen
to a historic low. That tells us people are getting the message."
"We know everyone looks forward to a nice long holiday weekend,
and we just want to urge motorists to buckle before getting on the
road to visit family and friends," said Milton R. Sees, secretary of
the Department of Transportation. "We are working with Illinois
State Police to save lives, and drivers can expect to get a ticket
if folks are not buckled up both day and night."
The Department of Transportation will suspend
construction-related lane closures wherever possible starting at 3
p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. Due to the nature of some projects,
some construction zones throughout the state will continue to
operate. The department is urging motorists to slow down and proceed
with caution through these work zones. Holiday travelers are
reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect. Nearly 31.7 million Americans, or 83 percent of all holiday
travelers, are expected to travel by automobile. This is a 1 percent
decrease from the approximately 32 million people who drove a year
ago. In Illinois, more than 1.5 million people will be traveling for
the holiday weekend. Of those, nearly 1.2 million will be driving
and 186,500 will be flying.
