Illinois doesn't have to make 'Choose Life' plates

[November 08, 2008]  CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois does not have to issue specialty license plates bearing the slogan "Choose Life."

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that officials are within their rights in trying to keep viewpoints on the touchy issue of abortion off Illinois plates.

The ruling reversed an order last year from a lower court. The previous ruling ordered the state to start producing plates as long as proponents could demonstrate enough interest.

The secretary of state's office issues 60 specialty plates dedicated to interests ranging from pet lovers to environmentalists.
