[October 23, 2008]  (AP)  Heavy snow was to blast Nebraska and Kansas on Thursday, while clear skies dawned over the East and sunshine drenched the West.

Frigid temperatures were to sweep over portions of Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Highs in the low 40s were to be widespread throughout the northern Plains. Light snow was possible over central Nebraska under the coldest air.

In the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast, a cold front was to trigger strong thunderstorms. The front was to stretch through the Midwest, bringing lighter precipitation to the region.

The coasts were to see clear skies but starkly different temperatures. The East was to remain cool as northerly winds draw polar air southward, resulting in temperatures below seasonal levels.

In the West, temperatures were to soar. Portions of Southern California were to see temperatures rise above 100 degrees, while the northern part of the state was to see temperatures in the upper 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of 5 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo., to a high of 100 degrees at Santee, Calif.
