Illinois House to debate leasing lottery

Send a link to a friend

[September 06, 2008]  Illinois House lawmakers are expected to return to Springfield on Sept. 10 and 11 to consider a possible plan to lease the state lottery to help pay for a statewide capital construction plan.

InsuranceThough details of the plan are still sketchy, media reports say that the proposal could reap almost $10 billion in one-time revenues. The money would go to finance road and bridge improvements, as well as school construction projects.

Questions remain as to how the loss of the annual lottery revenue would affect state priorities, such as education, that utilize the funding stream.

If the proposal is approved, then Illinois would be the only state in the nation that has leased its lottery.
