[September 20, 2008]  (AP)  Clear skies and cool temperatures were forecast Saturday for the eastern portion of the nation, from Maine to the Carolinas.

A weak trough in the jet stream over the South was expected to bring more showers and thunderstorms to portions of the Gulf Coast states as well as the lower and mid-Mississippi Valley.

A cold front pushing inland from the Pacific Ocean was expected to deliver rain to parts of the Northwest and Rockies.

High temperatures and clear skies were forecast for California and much of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Saranac Lake, N.Y., to a high of 100 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
