Coast Guard reopens Mississippi River stretch

[September 25, 2008]  ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A stretch of Mississippi River near St. Louis is back in business for recreational traffic.

The Coast Guard has reopened a 75-mile stretch of the river from about Chester, Ill., to just north of St. Louis.

It had been closed to recreational boaters since last week because torrential rains from Hurricane Ike's remnants raised the river to unsafe levels.
