Fighting Illini women's cross-country

[September 25, 2008]  CHAMPAIGN -- Illini women's cross country freshman Kristin Sutherland was named co-Big Ten Runner of Week for her performance this past weekend at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, the conference office announced today. This is Sutherland's first weekly honor as she shares it with Wisconsin junior Hanna Grinaker.

RestaurantIn her collegiate debut for the Orange and Blue, Sutherland led the field of 234 runners with a first-place 5K time of 17:47, paving the way for the Illini to take the team title for the second consecutive year. The Illini defeated 24 other teams for the victory with a point total of 37.

The last Illini to earn Big Ten Runner of the Week honors was Angela Bizzarri on Sept. 26, 2006.

After having this weekend off, Illinois will travel to South Bend on Oct. 3 to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational at 1 p.m.
