[April 01, 2009]  The 24th annual Community Health Fair will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Park District's Sports Center. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.

This year's fair will focus on health, fitness and recycling. "Go Green!"

More than 60 organizations will have displays or offer health screenings. Guests at the fair will learn new and innovative approaches to wellness.

Health screenings are always popular at the fair and many will be offered: blood pressure, blood sugar/diabetes, body mass index, bone density, child development, cholesterol, hemoglobin, oral cancer, pH testing and pulse oximetry. All screenings except the hemoglobin ($1) and cholesterol ($5) will be free of charge.

Do you have recyclable items in your home? Besides the health screenings and health exhibits, the Community Health Fair will provide a chance for you and your family to bring in recyclable items! Nine different organizations will attend the health fair to collect various recyclables. The items that will be accepted are as follows: printer cartridges, cell phones, eyeglasses, pop tabs, plastic bags, CFL light bulbs (swirly style), medications and mercury products. Container glass will be collected at Lincoln Community High School.

Exterminator

There will also be a food drive. Attendees are asked to bring food donations for the local food pantries. These donations will be collected by United Way.

The Red Cross will conduct a blood bank from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with the health fair. Your gift of blood can help save someone's life, so please make plans to give at the Red Cross blood bank. First-time donors are welcome. No experience needed!

Saturday's entertainment

Dan Dugan will demonstrate yoshukai karate with his spirited group of students. Sensei Dugan has been teaching this ancient art throughout central Illinois for over 27 years.

Logan County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Pharis will demonstrate the skills of the Logan County drug dog, showing how these dogs are able to successfully conduct their searches. Pharis will be available for questions as well.

Jayne Weaver will provide a basic introduction to zumba from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. in the aerobics room. Zumba is a new fitness routine that combines Latin rhythms with fun, fat-burning dance moves. Zumba is sure to get your heart pumping and your soul laughing. It's an innovative way to get in shape and enjoy working up a sweat!

Beth Farmer will offer a spin demonstration too. Spinning is a great exercise using a stationary bicycle. See how to set up your specialized bike and get a workout in as well.

The Lincoln tae kwon do group will also take center stage. Led by Scott Brown, this high-energy performance is always a popular segment and sure to entertain all ages.

Closing credits

Nutritious foods prepared by Peggy's Place will be available for purchase at the fair throughout the day.

The Community Health Fair is co-sponsored by the Lincoln Park District and the Logan County Department of Public Health.
