[April 09, 2009]  (AP)  Rain and high-elevation snow was expected over the western U.S. Thursday.

A mixture of rain and high-elevation snowfall was expected across the Great Basin. Light to moderate snow showers were to blanket the central Great Basin and the western regions of the central and northern Plains.

HardwareWestern Wyoming and north-central Utah were to see the heaviest amounts of snowfall, with 10 to 20 inches and brisk northwest winds. Snow showers were to taper off during the afternoon as the system moved east.

A second eastern Pacific storm was to move across the West Coast, bringing mixed precipitation, cool temperatures, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms throughout the day.

Precipitation and storms will spread into the Intermountains by Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the eastern U.S. was to see fairly quiet weather activity. Lingering moisture and cold temperatures were to produce pockets of light snow showers over the Northeast and rain showers along the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 95 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
