[April 10, 2009]  (AP)  Strong thunderstorms were expected to spread into the eastern U.S. on Friday as a storm system moved from the Mississippi Valley into the southern Appalachians.

The greatest potential for severe weather was in the Southeast, with strong winds, large hail and the possibility of weak tornadoes.

Heavy rain was expected across Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland all day, and also along the Gulf Coast and southeastern states.

The most intense storms were expected in eastern Tennessee by Friday evening.

In the West, significant rainfall was to hit the southwest and intra-mountain regions, with less substantial precipitation to the Northwest and northern Rockies.

Along the California coast, a period of showers and thunderstorms was possible in the morning with showers lingering into the afternoon.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to a high of 104 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
