Significant drug seizure Friday in Logan County

[April 20, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- The following report was released Monday morning by Illinois State Police District 9:

Incident: Significant drug seizure

Location: Interstate 55 northbound at milepost 126, Logan County

Date, time: April 17, 3:44 p.m.

Individual involved: Jose Luis Hernandez Nunez, 51-year-old male, Greenfield, Mo.

Narrative: On Friday at approximately 3:44 p.m., an Illinois State Police trooper observed a purple 1999 Kenworth truck-tractor with a cracked windshield and flatbed trailer traveling northbound on Interstate 55 near milepost 126. The trooper initiated a traffic stop for the observed equipment violation and to conduct a motor carrier safety inspection. During the traffic stop, a K-9 officer arrived on scene and conducted a free air sniff of the unit. The K-9 alerted to the unit, and a subsequent search revealed approximately 40 kilos of cocaine.

Hernandez Nunez was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, manufacture-delivery of a controlled substance and calculated criminal drug conspiracy. He was transported to the Logan County Jail.

The public is reminded that anyone is presumed innocent until charges are proven in a court of law.
