[April 21, 2009]  ROCKFORD (AP) -- Several public schools in Rockford were locked down after a student was shot outside a school building.

Police Sgt. Andre Brass said a male student was shot in the leg around 9 a.m. Monday outside the Auburn High School freshman campus. The student was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Brass said a red truck or sport utility vehicle pulled up near the student and words were exchanged before shots were fired from the vehicle.

Nobody was taken into custody, so as a precaution, both Auburn campuses and nearby McIntosh Elementary School were put on lockdown.

A phone message left for the principal at the Auburn freshman campus was not returned.
