[April 24, 2009]  (AP)  Temperatures were expected to shoot up Friday across the Northeast as clouds and precipitation move offshore into the Atlantic.

Most of the East was to see gorgeous weather, with temperatures rising up to 20 degrees in some spots. A few clouds and showers were possible in other parts of the Northeast.

Wet weather was expected in the Great Lakes, and severe thunderstorms, along with hail and strong winds, were possible over Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

A cold front was to bring rain and some snow showers to the Rockies and northern Plains, along with cooler temperatures. Rain and high-elevation snow was likely in California and Nevada.

West of the Rockies, substantial cooling was likely across California, but the Northwest was to see highs rise a few degrees over Thursday's chilly temperatures.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 17 degrees at Cut Bank, Mont., to a high of 97 degrees at Needles, Calif.
