Penny Pinching will be a four-week "how to" series. Week one
brings us John Fulton from the University of Illinois Extension
office. John is a well-known go-to man when it comes to plants. He
will guide us through container gardening as well as conventional
gardening. Skip the produce section at the market this summer and
grow your own. Learn how and what to plant. From pots to plots, John
will have us rich in nature's abundance, as well as more pennies in
our pockets. This class will be approximately one hour and is
scheduled for May 26 at 7 p.m. in the Craft Room at the Rec Center.
Free! Free! Free! These two programs are in everyone's budgets. We
are talking about the Fishing Clinic and the Fishing Derby.
These two separate but related events start off with the clinic on
June 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the park district headquarters; then the
derby is on the following Saturday, June 6, at Hickory Lane
Campground near Atlanta. Herb Drier with the Department of Natural
Resources will lead us through the ins and outs of fishing. He will
teach young anglers how to tie on a hook, casting techniques and the
use of different baits. Much of this is hands-on, and all materials
are furnished. In addition, great prizes will be awarded in several
different categories. You might even win one of several Zebco
fishing rods! The Fishing Derby is sponsored by D.A.R.E. with Sgt.
Ken Greenslate. Bait your hooks and cast them in the pond at 9 a.m.
Come out for some fun competition! Judging will be around 11:15
a.m., with lunch to follow. The wiener wagon will be on hand to
offer hot dogs and sodas to the fishermen. Parental approval is a
must, and parents are encouraged to attend.
Julie Harris Larson returns as our tennis instructor.
Larson was ranked No. 1 her entire competitive career. Lessons are
tailored for the beginner to intermediate skill levels, focusing on
forehand and backhand, serve and strategy. Players will be grouped
by age divisions. All players should bring their own racquet, and
tennis shoes are required. Tennis balls will be provided. Lessons
will be on our indoor tennis courts. Classes are June 9-12 with this
schedule: kindergarten through second grade, 9-9:45 a.m.;
third-fifth grade, 9:45-10:45 a.m.; sixth-eighth grade, 10:45-11:45
a.m.

It's tee ball time again. We welcome back Chris Ciaccio
and Brooke Eeten to teach the fundamentals of baseball, including
hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. Emphasis is on
sportsmanship, teamwork and fun! Roster information will be
available at the front desk. T-shirts, caps and schedules will be
distributed at the first practice. All athletes must wear sneakers
and have their own ball glove. Tee ball is played on Breezy Field;
or, if the weather is bad, we'll play on the indoor courts. Games
will be played on Saturday mornings starting June 13, and the series
lasts for six weeks.
Once again, we offer summer college memberships for our
returning college students. They may enjoy the benefits of a
full-access membership at a discounted price. Memberships are
available from May 15 to Aug. 15 with a valid college ID. Aerobic
and spin classes are included with this pass.
