Melvin 'Gene' Johnson

[April 29, 2009]  BLOOMINGTON -- Melvin Eugene "Gene" Johnson, 66, of Bloomington, died Monday, April 27, 2009, at 9:25 a.m. at his home.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta, with Maurice Stribling officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service time at the funeral home.

Burial will be in McLean Cemetery, rural McLean.

He was born Sept. 16, 1942, in Lincoln, to Melvin Newell and Pearle Mae Sapp Johnson. He married Linda Gordon in November 1962. They later divorced.

He is survived by his daughter, Pam (and Jeff) Beach of Bloomington; two granddaughters, Taylor and Lexi Beach; his ex-wife, of Bloomington; two sisters, Shirley Cochran of Arizona and Betty Miller of Normal; two brothers, Orville Johnson of Alabama and George Johnson of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bruce Johnson; and two sisters, Ruby Jackson and Marie Welchel.

Gene had loved playing and watching baseball and was an avid fan of the Cardinals.
