[August 01, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- The largest union for government workers says Gov. Pat Quinn's cuts in the state budget will cost Illinois thousands of jobs and weaken key services.

Henry Bayer is the executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31. He says Quinn and the state's lawmakers will share the blame for the fallout from the cuts announced Friday.

Bayer called on Quinn and lawmakers to return to Springfield and find ways to raise new revenue.

Quinn and lawmakers agreed on a new state budget that left him with the job of cutting spending by at least $1 billion and deciding where to spend a pool of about $3.4 billion.

The Democratic governor says the budget leaves Illinois with about $1.4 billion in unmet needs. He says more revenue must be found.
