[August 10, 2009]  (AP)  Active weather will again sweep through the eastern third of the country on Monday. A long front will drag through the Plains and Northeast, providing areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms. The heaviest of these thunderstorms will pop up in the Mississippi Valley.

HardwareThe Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight chance of severe weather from eastern Kansas through western New York. This means that some of these thunderstorms may become severe, producing tornadoes. Residents should monitor local conditions.

A warm front will push through the Southeast, adding more precipitation to the East. Meanwhile, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop in the central Plains. A ridge of high pressure will keep dry and warm to hot conditions going in the Southwest.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 90s. The southern Plains will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Southwest will see similar temperatures. The Northwest will rise into the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 28 degrees in Gunnison County, Colo., to a high of 112 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
