The nation's weather

[August 11, 2009]  (AP)  Another round of unsettled weather was expected to develop across the eastern half of the nation Tuesday.

InsuranceA front would continue to spark scattered showers to isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as it dropped from New England into the Mid-Atlantic and stretches into the central and southern Plains. Waves of energy circulating along this front would combine with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean to produce areas of strong storms along and near the front.

Heavy rainfall and significant thunderstorms were expected to develop in the Ozarks and areas near the central Gulf Coast. There was a slight chance for severe thunderstorms with isolated hail and strong to damaging wind gusts across portions of the mid-Mississippi and western Ohio valleys, parts of southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic, and areas of the southern and central high Plains.

In the West, a second front was forecast to trigger scattered showers across the areas of Washington and northwestern Oregon as it becomes stalled across the Pacific Northwest.

Meanwhile, the return of moderate onshore flow was to jump start a gradual cooling trend throughout much of California. Elsewhere, dry and warm weather would persist across the Southwest and the central Great Basin due to a dominant ridge of high pressure.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 108 degrees at Bullhead City, Ariz.
