Quinn pays his way into state fair

[August 15, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- With Illinois in deep financial trouble, Gov. Pat Quinn opened the state fair by paying for his own admission.

Governors and public officials usually get into the fair free. But Quinn says everyone should make sacrifices and help put the state back on solid ground, so he bought a $5 ticket Friday morning.

Quinn officially opened the fair by saying it represents a commitment to hard work, education and patriotism.

The fair runs through Aug. 23 and features the traditional mix of junk food, animals and politicians.

This year it also has Abraham Lincoln in butter -- a twist on the butter cow that is displayed every year.
