[August 15, 2009]  (AP)  Scattered thunderstorms were forecast to pop up over the Plains on Saturday as a cold front moves through the region.

A low pressure system developing over the northern Rockies will move eastward Saturday and push a cold front though the Plains and toward the Mississippi River Valley.

This system will pull much moisture in from the Gulf, allowing favorable conditions for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Expect rainfall amounts less than half an inch, with up to 1-2 inches in areas of severe thunderstorm development, mainly in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

Scattered showers will also continue in the Intermountain West as flow behind this system creates a stationary front that will extend over the Rockies.

Elsewhere, high pressure will neighbor this trough on both sides, hovering over the East and West Coasts. The Northeast will see mostly sunny skies and warm conditions with highs approaching the 90s.

Out West, expect warm and dry weather with plenty of sunshine. Highs will push back into the mid-70s in the Pacific Northwest, California will see highs in the 80s and 90s, while the deserts in the Southwest will remain near 100.

Over the Carolinas and Georgia, another day of scattered showers and thunderstorms is likely develop in the afternoon. Expect highs to remain in the 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo. to a high of 109 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
