[August 20, 2009]  (AP)  The Ohio River Valley and New England were forecast to see unsettled weather Thursday as a low pressure system continued tracking eastward over the Great Lakes.

InsuranceFlow around this low would push warm and moist air up the eastern U.S., while cold and dry air would pour into the northern Plains and upper Midwest. This was expected to create a warm front over the Northeast and a cold front that would extend southward and move from the southern Plains over the Mississippi River Valley.

Scattered showers were expected to develop anywhere along the front, with severe weather likely in the north. This storm has a history of producing hail, damaging winds, periods of heavy rain and even tornadoes. Cool and windy conditions were expected in the upper Midwest and northern Plains as the system pushes eastward. Highs were forecast to only reach into the 60s with winds between 15-25 mph.

East of this front, warm and humid weather was expected Thursday. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms were to persist along the Gulf states as high pressure to the south continued pushing much moisture over the region.

In the West, warm and dry conditions were anticipated Thursday due to a dominant ridge of high pressure sitting over the West Coast. A heat advisory was to remain in effect for the Southwest due to another day of above 100. A small trough of low pressure off the coast of California was expected to continue pushing moist low-level morning clouds over the coastal regions of the state.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at Boulder, Wyo., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
