[August 28, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- Police have shot and killed a knife-wielding man who threatened an elderly bystander in Chicago's downtown theater district.

Police say an officer also was hit by a shot fired by his own partner, but wasn't seriously injured.

Officers responded about 1 p.m. to a report of a man "menacing people with a knife."

They tried to subdue him with pepper spray but he fled and grabbed an elderly man, holding the knife to him on a crowded corner of Chicago's storied State Street.

One officer tried to disarm the suspect. When he wasn't successful, his partner fired his gun, hitting both the suspect and the other officer. The bystander wasn't injured.

Police say the suspect could have been an aggressive panhandler who turned violent.
