[December 08, 2009]  Monday evening before the actual business of the city began, Mayor Keith Snyder introduced what he said he hoped would be a new annual tradition.

RestaurantSnyder had asked that the two aldermen from each ward put their heads together and select a recipient from their ward whom they felt deserved to be recognized.

The recipients each received a city of Lincoln Christmas ornament. The annual Christmas ornament is offered to the public through Main Street Lincoln. This year's ornament is a depiction of the first Logan County Courthouse.

Ward 1

Alderwoman Stacy Bacon spoke for Ward 1, introducing Bill Overton.

She commented on Overton's service to the city, saying: "Bill is very involved in the local food pantry. He puts in countless hours and manual labor for the pantry. Bill tells us that his entire family is very involved in the pantry, so thanks to Bill and his family."

Ward 2

Alderwoman Kathy Horn introduced Mike Fak as the person chosen by her and Alderman David Wilmert.

Horn commented: "Alderman Wilmert and I have selected a man with a quick wit and an imagination that is filled with many stories. He is always there for anyone who calls on him, and we believe recognition for all that he does in Lincoln is long overdue. We've selected Mike Fak."

Ward 3

Alderman David Armbrust read the following: "Life is a gift and offers the privilege, opportunity and responsibility to give something back by becoming something more. Jerry Berglin has done just that by his hours of tireless efforts in presenting the Festival of Trees. This year marks his fifth year, and all the proceeds are donated to local charities, which makes a very happy holiday season for those less fortunate, and in turn a very beautiful, spectacular sight for the residents of Friendship Manor, our community and our surrounding communities to enjoy."

Armbrust concluded: "Ward 3 wishes to acknowledge Jerry Berglin."

While there the mayor asked if Berglin would like to give an updated report on this year's event. Berglin commented that this year they have exceeded last year's goal and have raised over $5,000 thus far. He added that this year there were 89 entrants, 40 more than last year, and that tree sales are still under way.

Ward 4

Nathan Turner introduced Judy Busby as the Ward 4 recipient of the Christmas ornament.

He recounted Busby's many community service activities, saying: "Judy serves on the hospital board, on the Salvation Army board, as well as being a bell ringer. She volunteers at Abraham Lincoln Hospital and the Lincoln prison. She serves as a tutor at Washington-Monroe School and is on the board of directors of the United Way. Thanks, Judy, for all you do."

Ward 5

Alderwoman Marty Neitzel spoke for herself and Alderman Jeff Hoinacki as she introduced Elaine Aue of Lincoln's Ward 5.

Neitzel said: "Our recipient is a native of Lincoln, a retiree of AmerenCILCO. Instead of electing retirement, she has built a new facility on the west side and purchased a franchise of Culver's, which is famous for their soft custard and butter burgers. She shares her profits with businesses and fundraisers. She has plunged into economic development of Lincoln on the west side and started a new business which employs 30 people full and part time. The city of Lincoln would like to thank her for this wonderful business; therefore, Ward 5 is proud to announce that the city of Lincoln ornament award goes to Elaine Aue."

Recipients of the award received a representation of the ornament and should be able to pick up their actual award from the Main Street Lincoln office later this week.

Snyder said that there had been a snafu in the shipping of this year's ornament, but that Main Street Lincoln director Wanda Lee Rohlfs has said the ornaments will be shipped on Tuesday and should be in her office by the end of the week.
