[December 09, 2009]  Rebecca Van Nydeggen, Salvation Army director for Logan County, knows that contributions come in all denominations and every single donation is important during the red kettle season. "Pennies and nickels and dimes and quarters and 50-cent pieces and Susan B. Anthony dollars and actual bills... it all adds up," she said.

Bob Metz, owner of P&M Communications at 616 N. Chicago St. in Lincoln, is hoping $10 at a time will also help The Salvation Army during this Christmas season.

For the fourth year in a row, the retailer of cell phones, Dish and DirecTV as well as television sets is offering to help keep Salvation Army services going strong through the upcoming year.

Through Dec. 24, P&M is donating $10 to the Logan County Salvation Army for every satellite installation, U.S. Cellular, Jitterbug, Verizon Wireless cell phone activation and flat-screen TV sale.

Bob says that at the end of the season, he will tally up all the sales they have made and then present the local Salvation Army with a check based on the sales, to use as they desire.

"It is something we feel good about doing each year," said Metz. "We are a firm believer in community support and people doing all of their shopping with local retailers in Logan County.  Though Decatur is our main office, we purchase everything that we can in Logan County. All of our service vehicles have come from Graue Chevy in Lincoln for many, many years."

Metz says he admires all the volunteers who man the kettles, sometimes under less-than-comfortable conditions. And although his schedule, with owning two locations, prohibits his ringing the bell in person, he hopes that with customer support he can still fill a Salvation Army kettle.

P&M has served this community for over 25 years, and Bob invites residents who have been thinking about a satellite television system, cell phone or a new television to visit his store to see how competitive his prices are. And your patronage will help fill another kettle for The Salvation Army.
