[December 23, 2009]  MIAMI (AP) -- A Miami man was jailed in Tennessee after allegedly taking a $3,000 taxi ride there and refusing to pay the fare.

Memphis police arrested the man after the 1,600-mile drive on a charge of theft over $1,000. The man allegedly told Flamingo Taxis driver Lelis Almeira the woman he was visiting would pay when they arrived.

The woman said she doesn't know why the man came to see her and said she made clear beforehand she had no money to pay for the taxi.

The trip took 20 hours, including rest and meal stops.
