[December 22, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- The winter season is officially here and District 9 Illinois State Police Commander James Wolf would like to remind motorists to drive safely during the season of snow and ice.

This past weekend, District 9 Illinois State Police handled nearly 62 crashes involving property damage and personal injury and one fatal crash. Troopers also handled several incidents in which motorists slid off the roadway into the ditch.

Wolf reminds motorists to:

  • Slow down and increase your following distance.

  • Allow extra time to get to your destination.

  • Understand that the posted speed limit may be too fast for driving conditions.

  • During severe conditions, avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.

  • Remember, four-wheel-drive vehicles or SUVs may help with traction, but these vehicles will not help you stop any faster than a two-wheel-drive vehicle.
