[February 03, 2009]  The city street department and some of the city aldermen have been receiving phone calls about South College Street between Fifth and Sixth streets coming apart.

Back in September, a truck hauling the base to a wind turbine got lost and ended up on Fifth Street, then turned onto South College trying to get back to Woodlawn Road. This truck had 18 sets of wheels because of the weight. The truck's weight was 180,000 pounds, and the code limitation for city streets is 72,000 pounds. The truck was 108,000 pounds over the limit and was ticketed for being overweight.

The spot that has come apart on South College is where the truck turned. As the truck continued north on the street, it cracked the surface of the pavement in a couple of other spots also. With all the freezing and thawing this winter, areas of the roadway will need to be replaced.

Starting Thursday morning, the street department will be performing repairs to the section of roadway closest to the intersection of South College and Fifth Street by removing the old pavement and base and putting in new base and rock until this summer, when this section can be resealed. Until it is resealed, city workers will need to come back and level the rock as needed.
