[February 24, 2009]  (AP)  A strong storm system was slamming into the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, while a weaker one slipped over the northern and central Plains.

Heavy precipitation and breezy winds were predicted across the Northwest. The higher elevations can expect several inches of snow, while areas of significant rainfall are expected elsewhere.

RestaurantHigh pressure will keep skies across the Southwest mostly clear on Tuesday, with temperatures in the southern portion of the region reaching the 70s and 80s.

Over the Plains, a weak trough associated with the storm to the west will extend over the northern and central Plains. North Dakota will see snow during the day, with a couple of inches of snow accumulation possible.

Clouds and light precipitation will filter into the rest of the northern Plains and down into the central Plains as the day progresses. Warm air from the south will pour into the southern Plains, allowing temperatures to rise into the 80s.

In the Northeast, a slow moving and lingering storm will continue to produce clouds and light snow showers over the northern portion of New England. Winds also will continue to be gusty across the region for the first half of the day.

The storm will then push off to the northeast, allowing skies to begin to clear out and winds to die down.

Mostly clear skies will prevail across the Mid-Atlantic states, while some clouds will move in over the Mississippi Valley.

Most of the Southeast can also expect mostly clear skies during the day due to high pressure, although a few clouds will move in over the region by the end of the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 89 degrees at Tucson, Ariz.
