[January 24, 2009]  On Friday, a check for over $4,500 was presented by Jerry "Hippie" Hall, president of the VFW Post 1756 Men's Auxiliary, to Angela Stoltzenburg, Community Action executive director. The funds will be used to purchase classroom materials and equipment in Logan County that the Head Start program normally wouldn't be able to purchase with limited grant dollars.

RestaurantThe funds are a result of two successful events sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lincoln: a bicycle poker run and a family fun night in October.

The family event was a collaboration of many local entities, including the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, VFW general membership, and several business and personal donations. The Logan County Chapter of Thrivent matched the first $1,200 raised. The doors opened at 2 p.m. and the fun lasted through the evening. Four bands played: Shiftin' Gears, Tristen Paul, Greg Glick Blues Band and Bad Seed. Activities included a silent auction, games and fun for children, a hog roast, 50/50 drawings, and more.

"The Head Start children will directly benefit from the generosity of the VFW and the community members who supported their efforts," Stoltzenburg said. "This example of neighbors helping neighbors is what makes our community such a great place to be."
