[January 27, 2009]  (AP)  A mix of snow, ice and rain swept over the eastern half of the nation early Tuesday, while the Pacific Northwest braced for snow and the Northeast stayed cold and clear.

The eastern storm system will produce widespread ice across the southern Plains and the southern Mississippi Valley during the day.

Farther north, areas across the southern portion of the mid-Mississippi Valley could see at least half an inch of ice, along with an additional few inches of snow and sleet.

The northern portion of the mid-Mississippi Valley region can expect a few inches of snow and sleet. The northern Plains and the Upper Midwest will get some clouds and snow showers during the day.

The Northeast will also get hit by the storm system on Tuesday. The Mid-Atlantic states can expect several inches of sleet and snow to fall during the evening hours, with parts of Pennsylvania and New York possibly receiving around a half-foot.

The storm will dump rain over the Southeast, but conditions will be more pleasant near the Gulf.

Out West, rain loomed over the Pacific Northwest and snow was falling over the higher elevations. High pressure was creating clear skies over most the Southwest, except for the Rockies, which can expect snow showers.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 41 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 86 degrees at Victoria, Texas.
