[January 29, 2009]  Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital received approval from the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board on Tuesday to build a 25-bed replacement hospital in Lincoln.

A Certificate of Need was granted for a $50 million hospital project that will be constructed on a 58-acre site located west of Business Loop 55 in Lincoln. Groundbreaking is planned for later this spring, with construction expected to take about 20 months.

"We are very pleased that the planning board approved our application to construct a new hospital," said Dolan Dalpoas, ALMH president and CEO. "This action is a significant step forward in our journey to ensure that the next generation of Logan County residents has access to quality health care facilities."

The proposed structure is approximately 116,000 square feet and affords space for all outpatient services on the ground floor. The 25 private inpatient rooms will be located on a second story.

"The scope of ALMH and what it offers to the community will not change," Dalpoas said. "Every patient who currently receives care, from the obstetrics patient to the surgical patient, would have access to an advanced level of patient-centered care that would be made available through a new hospital. What will change is the manner in which the care is delivered."

A replacement hospital was one of many options first explored by ALMH and its board of directors when they began an architectural assessment of the facility five years ago. They decided in September 2006, after numerous surveys and community focus group meetings, that constructing an all-new hospital would best allow ALMH to preserve its mission.

When new in 1954, ALMH treated well over 100 inpatients daily with few -- if any -- outpatient procedures offered. The daily inpatient average has dropped to 14, while nearly 160 outpatient procedures are performed at ALMH daily. More than 60,000 outpatient visits are expected in the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
