2-vehicle crash with fatality in Logan County

[January 28, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police District 9 released the following accident report at midday Wednesday:

Incident: Two-vehicle crash with fatality

Location: Illinois 54 near 1000 Street in Logan County

Date, time: Jan. 28, 5:30 a.m.

Individuals involved:

Gary J. Jenkins, 65-year-old male, Clinton

Stephen E. Kalka, 47-year-old male, Mount Pulaski

Assisting agencies: Illinois State Police, Logan County Sheriff's Department, Chestnut EMS, Mount Pulaski Fire Department, Kenney Fire Department, DeWitt County Sheriff's Department

Narrative:

At approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, a two-vehicle crash occurred at Illinois 54 near 1000 Street. Jenkins was driving west in a 2000 Buick four-door. Kalka was driving east in a 1996 Ford truck.

Jenkins lost control of his vehicle and started sliding sideways on the snow-covered road. As the vehicle was sliding, the passenger side struck the front end of Kalka's Ford.

Jenkins died from injuries sustained in the crash. Kalka was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Both Jenkins and Kalka were wearing their seat belts.
