[January 28, 2009]  (AP)  A strong winter storm pounded the East early Wednesday, bringing heavy snow and crippling ice, while rain spread across the Southeast.

Snowfall will be heaviest Wednesday morning and early afternoon over the Ohio River Valley and Northeast states, with up to 12 inches anticipated.

RestaurantThe Mid-Atlantic states will see up to 2 inches of snow, turning to sleet and freezing rain by noon. The front extending into the Southeast will trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms with no more than an inch of rain.

In the northern Plains, low pressure will dip into the region from Canada. The system will trigger scattered flurries and keep highs well below freezing. High pressure over the central and southern Plains will allow for cool and dry conditions with mostly sunny skies.

In the West, a low pressure system will move over the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies, kicking up blizzard conditions and up to 12 inches of snow over the northern Rockies. The Pacific Northwest will see diminishing snow showers as this system moves eastward throughout the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 36 degrees at Greybull, Wyo., to a high of 91 degrees at Savannah, Ga.
