Tony's on in years now and doesn't move as well as he used to,
but then, who does? But he's always glad to see you and always has a
story or two. So instead of having a quiet breakfast by himself, he
perched on one of the empty chairs here at the philosophy counter of
the world dilemma think tank.
"Football this morning, guys?" he asked.
"Yep," said Doc. "Super Bowl, you know. All that good stuff."
Tony nodded. He listened quietly as we second-guessed coaches and
players and gave our assurances about which linebackers would and
would not be returning to training camp in the summer.
Steve wanted to include Tony in the conversation, so he turned to
the retired attorney and asked, "You a football fan, Tony?"
"Well," he said, "I like college football some. Especially the
Trojans. I went to USC, you know. That was my team."

"You played?" Doc asked.
Tony grinned and nodded. We all looked at his skinny frame in
amazement. We had visions of placekicker floating in our heads.
"I actually played for USC in the Rose Bowl," Tony said.
Our jaws dropped.
"What position, Tony?"
He laughed. "Second trumpet. Halftime."
