The Dow rose by 0.7 percent. The S&P gained 0.4 percent, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.55 percent from 3.54 percent late Wednesday. The yield on the three-month T-bill, considered one of the safest investments, rose to 0.18 percent from 0.16 percent late Wednesday. The dollar rose against other major currencies, while gold prices fell. Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 0.6 percent. In afternoon trading, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.7 percent, Germany's DAX index declined 1.6 percent, and France's CAC-40 fell 1.3 percent.
