18 months in prison for Blago investigation doctor
[July 02, 2009] CHICAGO (AP) -- A doctor who became tangled in the corruption investigation of ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was sentenced to 18 months in prison for hiding $3 million in income from a tax collector.

Dr. Robert Weinstein also was fined $75,000 on Wednesday for claiming the income was a gift. He later admitted it was siphoned from a charitable organization to which he was a trustee. The 64-year-old suburban Chicago doctor was a business partner of Stuart Levine, a star witness against Blagojevich fundraiser Tony Rezko. But Weinstein pleaded guilty to an unrelated crime that accused him and Levine of taking money in the form of loans from the organization, then arranging for the promissory notes to be sold to a foreign businessman who forgave them as a favor to Levine. |
