Bomke: General Assembly should be in session over the weekend

[July 02, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- As the clock runs out on the state budget, state Sen. Larry Bomke, R-Springfield, is outraged by the General Assembly not being called back into session until July 14.

"I am livid that Gov. Quinn is not calling the General Assembly back into session for two weeks," Bomke said. "People are facing cuts in services and job losses while no action will be taken on the budget for 13 days."

On July 1, the official start of the new fiscal year, Quinn held a press conference to announce that he was vetoing Senate Bill 1197, which would have kept some functions of state government from shutting down.

"The governor has no credibility," Bomke said. "If he was serious about passing a budget and getting Illinois out of our fiscal mess, we would meet tomorrow, not in the middle of this month."

With many budget solutions already presented and voted down, the Illinois budget situation is still bleak.

"We have too much at stake to just sit back and wait on Gov. Quinn for half of July," Bomke said. "The time for action is now."
