[July 08, 2009]  Oasis potluck and bingo

Join us at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, for the monthly potluck, featuring grilled pork sandwiches, salads, special dishes and wonderful desserts. There is no charge for food or beverage provided at this event. If you do not bring a dish to pass and wish to make a donation, the suggested amount for July is $3. Stay for bingo games sponsored by Christian Village.

 

The Oasis, Logan County's senior citizen center, 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln, is open weekdays, except holidays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center also is open on Friday and Sunday nights for table games. Dominic Dalpoas is the executive director.

Activities are open to all Logan County senior citizens, regardless of membership. Friends of The Oasis members receive a bimonthly newsletter by mail and reduced rates for classes and trips. For more information, call 732-6132 or 732-5844.

Online Social Security assistance

The Oasis will begin offering assistance in accessing Social Security information available online. This help will be offered the second Friday of each month. Services offered online include applying for benefits, how to qualify for benefits, estimating your benefits and what benefits you already receive. Call the senior center for an appointment at 732-6132.

Summer card party

The summer card party at the senior center will be Saturday, July 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 732-6132.

Line dancing

The Oasis is starting line dancing classes the second Monday of each month. The first class is July 13, beginning at 10 a.m. Bev McRoberts has graciously volunteered to assist. For more information, call 732-6132.

Book club

The book club at the senior center will meet Monday, July 13, beginning at 1 p.m. Come rekindle the rewards of reading a book and either sharing your thoughts with the group or just sitting back and listening to others. Refreshments provided.

Cards 4 U

Each Monday and Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m., folks are welcome to brush up on pinochle, rummy and learn new card games to stay mentally sharp, focused and have a good time.

Nursing Homes

AARP safe driving class

A driver safety class from AARP will be offered for seniors age 55 and older. It is an eight-hour course. For more information, please call 732-6132

Tuesday's lunch

The 11:30 a.m. lunch for July 14 will featuring tuna patty on bun, tomato salad, chips and dessert. The suggested donation is $3.75; if you stay to play cards, the suggested cost is $3.25. The reservation deadline is noon Monday, July 13.

Card winners

The card winners for weekday pinochle were Ken Harrell and Lucky Downey. The weekend pinochle winners were Eleanor Barton and Roy Sebastian.
