[July 10, 2009]  On Wednesday, July 15, Lincoln's First Presbyterian Church will host its annual pork barbecue. The First Presbyterian (USA) Church is located at the corner of Pekin and Ottawa, just north of the new junior high school building.

A huge tent for outdoor diners will go up next to the church on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 5 p.m. The feasting begins on Wednesday, July 15, at precisely 5 p.m. and continues until 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7, and those attending will dine on the traditional pulled pork barbecue sandwich and all the fixings, including a homemade dessert. Carryout is available in the alley between the church and the junior high building.

All the proceeds from the barbecue go to support local causes such as the food pantry, Community Action, Coats for Kids and Outdoor Camping for Deserving Children. The event is a labor of love for the church's Deacons Committee, which is headed this year by Carolyn Reynolds. Tickets are available from any church member, from IGA or at the door.

Your announcements and pictures are always free. LDN takes being your local neighborhood newspaper seriously. That means everything local that is of importance to you is important to us.

When it comes to announcements, whether anniversaries, births, milestones or just plain good news, LDN is happy to post that information, including pictures, free of charge.

So when you want to have 10,000 pairs of eyes see information you want to share, remember to submit to LDN.

It's as easy as sending Mike an e-mail here at Close Up or submitting through our handy icon now on the left side of our front page.

Zion Lutheran School eighth-grader Megan Opperman has placed fifth at the state level with her essay "Where Are the American Heroes Today." The essay contest is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Megan received recognition and a generous prize at the department convention, held at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center in Springfield.

Over 932 girls from across the U.S. will be competing in Indianapolis, Ind., the week of July 13 for a chance to become part of Junior Team USA and a chance to win up to $5,500 in scholarship money. Kayla Huskins, 14, daughter of Richard and Christie Huskins of Lincoln, will be one of the participants. Kayla ended the 2008-2009 bowling season with a league-high average of 177. During state competition in Champaign she bowled her highest game ever, a 278.

Field Trip Blast. Another YMCA field trip is fast approaching! A YMCA staff member will take the children to a water park for a day of fun in the sun! Please bring a sack lunch, sunblock, water bottle and proper attire for the trip and the return. This program is for second- to fifth-graders and runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop-off and pickup are at the YMCA Activity Center on Wyatt Avenue. Hurry and sign up NOW. There is space for only 13 children per trip. Here is the list of dates still available: July 21; Aug. 4, 11.
