Ill. lawmakers return to tackle budget, again

[July 14, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Illinois lawmakers are returning to Springfield for another try at passing a state budget.

HardwareThey could override Gov. Pat Quinn's veto of an out-of-balance budget that legislators approved last month. Or they could consider the governor's new idea of passing a budget and then figuring out in November whether to cut spending or raise taxes.

But many people and groups will be hoping for a quick decision when lawmakers meet Tuesday.

Paychecks can't go out to state employees without a new budget in place, and groups that provide local services on behalf of government don't know whether they'll be paid.
