[July 14, 2009]  (AP)  A large trough of low pressure will instigate unsettling weather in the Midwest on Tuesday.

Numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop from the northern Intermountain West to the upper Mississippi Valley as a low pressure system lifts northeastward into southern Canada. Additional energy from jet stream flow will heighten instability from the northern and central Plains to the upper and mid-Mississippi valleys.

This will translate into a slight risk for severe weather development as damaging winds and areas of large hail are expected across these regions. Atmospheric conditions throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa may become favorable for tornados due to a second wave of energy moving through the central Plains.

In the East, scattered precipitation and thunderstorms will continue to develop along a nearly stationary front stretching from the southern Mid-Atlantic through the central Plains. Most of this active weather is expected to develop along the central and eastern Gulf Coast and through the lower Mississippi Valley.

To the north, moisture associated with a low pressure system over southeastern Canada will create a chance for light, scattered showers across areas of northern New England.

Meanwhile, the upper and lower Great Lakes will remain dry with fair conditions due to high pressure.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
