Illinois court upholds abortion notification law

[July 17, 2009]  CHICAGO -- This week a federal appeals court breathed new life into an Illinois law that requires teenage girls to notify their parents before having abortions. Lawyers said the law could take effect within weeks.

HardwareThe appeals court described the law as "a permissible attempt to help a young woman make an informed choice about whether to have an abortion." It does not require the consent of parents but only that they be notified beforehand. A provision also allows teenagers to notify a judge instead.

The original parental notification law was passed in 1984, and an updated version followed in 1995. A federal judge had ordered a ban on enforcement of the law in 2007.
