[July 21, 2009]  11:07 p.m. Scully Park was the scene of a shooting Monday evening. Reports are that a lone gunman being sought for armed robbery and attempted breaking and entering at a home in the vicinity of the park was stopped by law enforcement officials at the southwest corner of the park.

When the alleged felon came out of his pickup truck with a gun drawn, police opened fire on the man hitting him in the exchange.

Neighbors state that they had heard of reports of a man firing a gun around the park starting at approximately 3:30 pm.

Shortly after 8:00 pm a call to police that a man was trying to break into a home brought law enforcement to the area and the shooting occurred.

Auxiliary from the Logan County Sheriff's Dept. cordoned off  a two-block area around the park as investigation units documented the evidence at the scene.

At the time of this report, the identity of the man and his condition is not available.

No law enforcement officials were hurt in the altercation.

The Illinois State Police began an investigation of the scene almost immediately. It is common for the ISP to become involved in a shooting involving officers in a local jurisdiction.

Further information will be reported as it is made available.
