[June 02, 2009]  The Lincoln Jaycees, a local chapter of the Illinois Jaycees, are raising money to fight cancer through a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The efforts by the Lincoln Jaycees are part of a national campaign by the U.S. Jaycees to raise $250,000 for the American Cancer Society in 2009.

HardwareThe Lincoln Jaycees will have a 50/50 drawing at the races Saturday at Lincoln Speedway. All of the Lincoln Jaycees' proceeds from the night's drawing will go to Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is a signature activity of the American Cancer Society. The event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those who last their battle to the disease and empowers participants to fight against cancer. In 2009, there are expected to be more than 5,000 Relay for Life events throughout the U.S. Participants are encouraged to form teams and raise money, which goes to fund programs, services and research for a cure for cancer.

The fundraiser will be for a local team participating in the Relay for Life event on June 19 at Lincoln Community High School.

In total, the U.S. Jaycees have raised more than $1 million for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Live events as a non-corporate national partner. Last year, the Illinois Jaycees raised more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The Lincoln Jaycees host various community activities, such as an Easter egg hunt, Breakfast with Santa and Angel Tree. They have a variety of management and fundraising projects, such as Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival vendor, haunted house and Lincoln Speedway 50/50.

Membership meetings are on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Meetings are open to the public.
