[June 03, 2009]  Comparative facts on the current Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital and the replacement hospital:

  • The ALMH replacement hospital will have a fixed MRI, available to patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

MRI testing is now available on a mobile unit that visits Lincoln a limited number of hours per week. Patients are taken outdoors to access the unit for imaging services.

  • A new hospital design will allow ALMH to better treat about 160 patients who visit each day for outpatient services, such as imaging, laboratory, rehabilitation services and other same-day care procedures.

The current hospital was designed to treat more than 100 inpatients per day and no outpatients.

  • The new facility will continue to have 25 inpatient rooms. These more modern rooms will have private bathrooms and a pull-out couch for family to stay overnight.

Not all patient rooms have private bathrooms, and the current facility is not designed with a dedicated area for family who stay by the patient's side.

  • ALMH's new emergency department will have 10 private treatment rooms and 6,500 square feet of space.

Currently, emergency medicine is in a crowded space of half the size with many treatment areas divided by curtains.

  • Rehabilitation services will have an 8,500-square-foot area with a warm-water therapy pool, wellness classes, locker rooms and a large gym with strengthening equipment and a walking track.

In a current space of 5,000 square feet, rehab services can sometimes accommodate aquatic therapy, if arrangements can be made at a local hotel. Wellness classes are held in a basement conference room, and the gym doesn't feature a walking track or adequate treatment areas.

  • ALMH will soon be located on a 58-acre campus to the west of Business Loop 55, with ready access to the interstate for patient transfers to regional hospitals, and space to grow.

Now located in a residential area, ALMH is tightly situated among homes, and when a helicopter arrives, local law enforcement must rush to the hospital to remove a sign located near the helipad.

  • The new hospital will have two floors. All outpatient services will be located on the ground floor.

ALMH currently has six floors, with outpatient services spread throughout the building.
