The line of fronts was expected to run from the mid-Atlantic Coast to the Sierra Nevada mountains, spawning wet weather along its entire length.

Particularly strong storms were anticipated in the central Appalachian Mountains into the Chesapeake and Delaware bays. Lines of thunderstorms were to sweep through the region with gusty winds heavy rain and frequent lightning.

Elsewhere in the East, heavy rain and lightning was forecast, but with lighter winds and less chance for hail.

Precipitation was also expected in the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas, with heavy rainfall possibly causing some localized flash flooding.

Showers and thunderstorms were possible for the northern and central portions of California as well as the southern mountains and deserts. Heavy rain was to fall over southern Oregon.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Pellston, Mich., to a high of 104 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
